If you are the proud owner of an RV, you’ve undoubtedly made a large investment in your vehicle. Such an investment is one worth protecting at all costs, which is why preventing RV theft is so important. Whether it’s thieves breaking into your rig while you’re at a campsite or someone trying to tow away your camper from your driveway, you will want to do everything you can to discourage thieves from even attempting to steal from you.
Parking Your RV: At the Campground
How you park your RV can play a big role in preventing theft. Parking your rig in the most secluded spot you can find at the campground might seem like a good idea if you want some personal space, but it might make your rig an easy target for thieves. You must park amongst others whose presence alone will prevent anyone from trying to break a lock in plain view.
Parking Your RV: At Home
When you’re storing your RV at home, don’t park it on the street or in the front of your house or driveway if you can avoid it. Park your rig behind a tall fence, in your backyard, or in a garage if you can. If you must park in your driveway, face your hitch away from the street by using a jockey wheel to turn your camper around without using a towing vehicle.
Securing Your RV
Lock up your rig whenever you leave it, even if you’re only gone for a few minutes, and lock it every night when you go to bed. This means shutting and latching windows, too. Most RVs come with a very general type of lock that can be easily opened by other keys also. Installing a new, more secure lock with a unique key can instantly upgrade your camper’s security. You can also invest even more by installing a security system with alarms.
